Our Actions
Four strategic axes to ensure a sustainable, inclusive and resilient development of the Comoros archipelago.
APPLIED RESEARCH
Field Turned
INRAPE intervenes on four main priority areas that correspond to the major challenges of Comorian development: agriculture, fisheries, the environment and food security. Each programme is designed in consultation with communities and decision-makers to ensure a concrete and measurable impact.
Plant breeding
Insular Agroecology
INRAPE works to develop plant varieties adapted to the unique agro-climatic conditions of the Comoros and to promote sustainable agricultural practices.
Our specialized teams collaborate with farmers in the archipelago to co-develop solutions adapted to each island, each sector and each community. The agriculture program covers rice cultivation, vegetable crops, fragrance plants (ylang-ylang, geranium), vanilla and food crops.
Current Programs
Manage Sustainably
Our Marine Resources
The Comoros has an Exclusive Economic Zone of 160,000 km². INRAPE ensures the scientific and sustainable management of these exceptional fishery resources.
The Fisheries and Marine Resources Department conducts regular stock assessments, develops local aquaculture, protects coral ecosystems and supports artisanal fishermen in adopting responsible practices. Our work feeds directly into national marine resource management policies.
Current Programs
Preserving Heritage
Natural Exceptional
The Comoros is home to a unique biodiversity in the world, with many endemic terrestrial and marine species. INRAPE is dedicated to their preservation and scientific valorization.
Our teams conduct naturalistic inventories, monitor the state of high-altitude wet forests, study the migrations of emblematic marine species (coelacanths, humpback whales, dugongs) and support the implementation of national climate commitments.
Current Programs
Feeding Better,
Feed All
Food and nutrition security is at the heart of INRAPE's commitments. We produce the scientific data needed to define effective public policies.
Our nutritional analyses, agricultural value chain studies, and food quality control programs feed directly into national nutrition plans. We are working closely with UNICEF, who and the Comorian government to reduce chronic malnutrition, especially among children under 5.
Current Programs
High Impact Initiatives
Structuring projects that mark INRAPE's commitment to sustainable change in the Comoros.
2022–2026
State Safety Programme
Creation of a national seed bank, selection of varieties adapted to climate change and establishment of a seed multiplication network on the 3 islands. This project, funded by FAO and the EU, aims to secure the long-term food supply.
2023–2027
AquaCom — Sustainable Aquaculture
Development of marine and freshwater fish farming to complement domestic fish production and reduce pressure on wild stocks.
2021–2025
Island Biodiversity Network
Creation of a terrestrial and marine biodiversity monitoring network involving researchers, NGOs and local communities in a shared data system.
Participate in our research programs
INRAPE welcomes researchers, doctoral students and interns. We are also open to national and international institutional partnerships.
